Hal Hartley is mainly known for his movies, but he also directed a couple of videos. The Kurtodrome site has searched the web and YouTube to find these videos and - although you can't say it was a successful journey - nevertheless this is what we've dug up...

BETH ORTON - Stolen Car
You know you're getting a bit too much into the work of a director if you're flicking channels, come across MTV, see a video and think: "Hey, I know that wall from a Hal Hartley movie." It was only then that I identified Beth Orton and the people with microphones.
The way the microphones are held near Beth is a nod to Hal Hartley's play Soon, where the microphones served as a tool to hear what the actors were saying and as an added layer of chereography. If you've seen Soon, you'll love Stolen Car, but it must be said that it worked slightly better in the play than in this video. The three actors (including Hal Hartley's wife) were also actors in Soon. (YouTube video by bethHYPHENortonDOTbe)

YO LA TENGO - From A Motel 6
Music by Yo La Tengo was already used in Hartley's Simple Men and in 1993 the collaboration resulted in a video by Hal Hartley for the band. You'll see a band, their tools and a Hartleyesque location. (YouTube video by cupidtrick)

THE BREEDERS - Iris
For this video we'll just copy the description on Hartley's site: "Two young women playing out roles associated with the purchasing of real estate. Questions regarding the worries of ownership versus the worries of being un-invested. Intimations of a life filled with effort and debt... Tie this all together somehow with lines from the song, Iris by the Breeders." The Red Hot Organization commissioned the video for a compilation VHS, proceeds from the sales of which went to support further treatment of AIDS. The actresses are Parker Posey and Sabrina Lloyd. EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL - Walking Wounded / The Only Living Boy in New York
Tracey Thorne on her band's collaboration with Hal Hartley: "When I first saw his films, I thought, Here's a kindred spirit." Hartley directed a couple of videos for the band, the Simon and Garfunkel cover The Only Living Boy in New York and Walking Wounded. "The Only Living Boy" is available on YouTube, there is a squeaky (read: fast-forwarded) version of "Walking Wounded" (but at least this allows you to watch the video).

Masatoshi Nagase's Boom 'n' Bust was also directed by Hal Hartley, but wasn't available anywhere either.
